EKU Defense Solid Again in Second Preseason Scrimmage

Senior DB Jeremy Caldwell
RICHMOND, Ky. – For the second consecutive weekend, the Eastern Kentucky University football team held a preseason scrimmage in preparation for its Sept. 3 opener at Kansas State. Once again, the defense looked sharp as it held the offense without a touchdown in three of the four quarters.

Sloppy play stood out in the first quarter of action as there were four fumbles committed by the Colonels.

Most of the action took place in the second quarter. Junior running back Matt Denham produced the first big play with a 70-yard run through the left side of the offensive line. However, the EKU defense held the offense out of the end zone and proceeded to block the ensuing field goal attempt.

Minutes later the Eastern Kentucky offense finally hit pay dirt. Freshman quarterback Travis Carlyle found junior wide out Cameron Bailey in stride behind the defense for a 55-yard touchdown strike.

Senior Jeremy Caldwell, a candidate for the 2011 Buck Buchanan Award, then took a kick-off return approximately 85 yards for another score. Later in the second quarter, redshirt freshman Austin Delpont connected on a 41-yard field goal try.

Right before halftime, a pass from junior quarterback #T.J. Pryor was deflected at the line of scrimmage and intercepted by redshirt freshman Brandon Stanley#. The defensive back then weaved through traffic to return the interception 15 yards for a touchdown.

The second half featured numerous stops by the Colonel defense. The only scoring came from a pair of field goals from sophomore Luke Pray. The second string offense faced a two-minute situation at the end of the scrimmage and was able to move the ball into field goal range for Pray.

The team is scheduled to host ‘Meet the Colonels’ night next Saturday, Aug. 27 at Roy Kidd Stadium beginning at 6:30 p.m.
