Week One Update From Preseason Football Camp

The EKU helmets will look a touch different in 2012.
RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University football team is finishing up week one of preseason camp Thursday. Below are some news and notes from the past week …

--After the first few practices were held in the evening, EKU moved its practice schedule to very early in the morning. The Colonels are scheduled to hold practices from 6:45 to about 10 a.m. every day during camp (excluding the off day of Sunday). Head coach Dean Hood has often split the practice time between veterans and newcomers to help the new players gain a quicker grasp of the Colonel offense and defense.

Note: Friday's practice (Aug. 9) has been moved to 1:45 p.m. and will go until about 4:30 p.m.

--Eastern’s first scrimmage is set for this Saturday morning. The Colonels are also scheduled to hold another scrimmage session on Saturday, Aug. 18.

--There are no major injuries to report. Coach Hood noted there have been a handful of minor hamstring injuries, but nothing serious.

--Chocolate milk is the drink of choice handed out by the strength and conditioning staff following practice. It takes about eight gallons to fill cups for the entire team.

--Coach Hood has been impressed with the freshman offensive linemen. They may not be needed this year with four returning starters, but that is a good sign for the future.

--EKU will be wearing a new-look helmet this year featuring a matte finish as opposed to the traditional glossy helmets. A good comparison would be Mississippi State helmets from last year.

--Here are some dates to mark on the calendar: Thursday, Aug. 23 – Colonel Club Fish Fry at Roy Kidd Stadium (6:30 p.m.); Saturday, Aug. 25 – Meet the Colonels Night at Roy Kidd Stadium (TBA); Tuesday, Aug. 28 – Dean Hood Radio Show at Gillum’s (6:30 p.m.).

EKU kicks off the 2012 schedule on Sept. 1 at Purdue. The season opener will be televised by the Big Ten Network beginning at 3:30 p.m. The Colonels’ home opener is scheduled for Sept. 8 against Morehead State at 6 p.m. Fans can reserve 2012 season tickets by contacting the EKU athletics ticket office at 859-622-2122.
