BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – With two players finishing first and second, Eastern Kentucky University’s men’s golf team won the John Piper Intercollegiate hosted by Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio. EKU’s Jesse Massie earned individual medalist honors and Phil Hendrickson finished one shot behind. Two more Colonels turned in top-10 finishes. Trey Bowling placed fifth and Justin Moore eighth.
The event was played at the Stone Ridge Golf Club.
EKU turned in the best score of the day to distance itself from the competition. The Colonels entered today’s final round leading host Bowling Green State by two shots, but a team score of 283 coupled with BGSU’s final round 295 left Eastern out in front by 14 shots when the final hole was completed. EKU’s three round total of 844 (283-278-283) was 20-under-par.
Bowling Green State finished second with an 858 (-6) followed by Wisconsin-Green Bay (879, +15) in third, Cleveland State (883, +19) in fourth and Ball State (890, +26) in fifth.
Massie followed yesterday’s rounds of 70 and 66 with a 71 today. His final round total tied two others for the second best of the day. Massie’s three-round total of 207 was nine-under-par. Hendrickson carded a 72 in the final round for a total of 208, eight-under-par. Bowling posted the best round of the day, a three-under-par 69, and jumped from a tie for 11th to fifth place. He finished the event with a two-under-par 214. Moore’s final round 71 moved the senior to eighth place.
Ryan Britt tied for 26th with a total of 225 (+9).
Stone Ridge is a par-72, 6,900 yard course designed by Arthur Hills located on the outskirts of Bowling Green. This is the seventh time the Falcons have hosted the John Piper Intercollegiate at Stone Ridge.
The Colonels are a perfect two-for-two to start the 2007-08 season. Prior to this week’s title at the John Piper Intercollegiate EKU took home first place at the Wasioto Winds Fall Kick-Off Classic to open the fall season. Eastern puts its winning streak on the line at the Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational beginning on Monday. The event will be hosted by Ball State University in Muncie, Ind.
