RICHMOND, Ky. – In the first tennis tournament of the fall season, junior Svetlana Pimenova won all four of her singles matches on her way to capturing the Women’s A Singles Flight title of the 2007 Steve Baras Fall Tennis Classic hosted by Chattanooga. The three-day tournament was played at the Champions Club in Hixson, Tenn.
Pimenova eased into the semifinals with a pair of straight set victories. The native of Saint Petersburg, Russia, then defeated Middle Tennessee’s Stephanie Parkison 6-3, 6-2 to reach the championship match. In the finals, Pimenova dispatched of Middle Tennessee’s Elvira Yusupova, 7-5, 6-2.
On the men’s side, newcomer Alejandro Das reached the finals of the Men’s A Singles Flight. Das, hailing from Valencia, Spain, pulled off a three-set triumph over Jacksonville State’s Eduardo Saratt to reach the semifinals. Das then used another three-set victory, this time over UNC Greensboro’s Andrey Bubnov in a tie-breaker, to reach the championship match. In the finals, UTC’s Badr Bouabdellah ended Das’ run with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 decision.
Eleven teams participated in the tournament including host Chattanooga, UAB, Belmont, Jacksonville State, Kennesaw State, Lee University, Lipscomb, Mercer, Middle Tennessee, Samford and UNC Greensboro.
The women’s tennis team is back in action the first weekend of October at the Cincinnati Fall Invite. Meanwhile, the Colonel men next play at the Louisville Fall Invite on Oct. 12.
