ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Sophomore Johannes John held on for a three-set win at No. 4 singles to propel the Eastern Kentucky University men’s tennis team to a 4-3 win over host Flagler Monday afternoon. Earlier in the day, the Colonels knocked off Averett, 6-0. With the two wins, the Colonels improve to 8-6.
Eastern needed to win four of the six singles matches to clinch the team victory over Flagler after dropping all three doubles contests. Freshman Alex Das Izquierdo (No. 2), junior Mel Segota (No. 3) and senior Fred Goncalves (No. 5) gave the Colonels three points with straight set wins.
John and Flagler’s Harry Snoxell fought all the way to a third set tie-breaker to determine the team outcome. John prevailed in the breaker, 7-5.
“We won today because of our discipline and belief in nothing less than victory,” EKU head coach Rob Oertel said. “This was a great effort by all of our players today.”
Eastern Kentucky continues its spring break trip on Tuesday at Jacksonville.
