No. 15 Hawai`i Wins Pitching Duel Over EKU Softball

HONOLULU, Hawai`i – Eastern Kentucky held No. 15 Hawai`i hitless through the first four innings, but the Rainbow Wahine scratched across a run in the sixth and squeaked out a 1-0 win on Sunday in the semifinals of the Pepsi Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament hosted by the University of Hawai`i. The pitchers, freshman Stacye Toups for the Colonels (10-7) and Kate Robinson for Hawai`i (15-4) were the stars of the game.

Toups (4-3) pitched the first four innings without allowing a hit and only allowed three hits and one walk in six innings of work. She struck out a pair of batters. Robinson tossed a four-hit shutout while walking three and striking out six.

EKU threatened to score first in the top of the sixth inning after a pair of runners reached base. Adriel Foxley singled up the middle with one out and Shyenne Hussey followed with a walk. However, the next two batters struck out and the game remained scoreless.

A lead-off single by Tanisha Milca in the bottom of the sixth led to the game’s first run. A sacrifice bunt moved the runner into scoring position. Kaulana Gould’s single to right center made it 1-0 in favor of Hawai`i.

Cassi Gibson’s two-out single got the tying run on base in the Colonels’ half of the seventh, but Robinson struck out the next batter to end the game.

Eastern Kentucky went 2-4 at the Pepsi Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament and advanced to the semifinals. Three of the four losses were to top-25 ranked teams.

Hussey and catcher Jena Handley were selected to the all-tournament team.

The Colonels will begin Ohio Valley Conference play on Saturday when they host Southeast Missouri State at Hood Field on the EKU campus. The doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m.
