RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University women’s soccer team picked up its first victory of the season on Sunday, beating UT Chattanooga on the road, 2-0. With the win, the Colonels (1-0-1) are off to their best start in the program’s history.
“I’m very pleased with the way we played today,” head coach Lindsay Basalyga said. “We didn’t capitalize on some opportunities early on, but we found a way to win.”
The match was a defensive battle for much of its duration, remaining scoreless until the 79:13 mark. Junior midfielder Lauren Imsande then received a pass from freshman midfielder Jessica Reed and fired it over the head of the Chattanooga goalkeeper for the first score of the game.
Only seven minutes later, with just four minutes left in the match, senior midfielder Laura Caldon received the ball off a throw-in by senior midfielder Lindsay Ismer and laced a shot past the UTC keeper again to make it 2-0.
“We just competed today,” Caldon said. “We came out to play, and we never gave up.”
In its first shutout of the 2008 season, the EKU defense was led by junior defender Jessica Goshert and sophomore goalkeeper Stephanie Lynch. Lynch remained in the net all 90 minutes of the match and made three saves to help the Colonels secure their first regular season victory of the year.
“We won our two scrimmages,” Reed said. “But this was our first real victory, and it was a big one. We are going to move forward from here.”
The Colonels return to action on September 5 when they travel west to play Fresno State.
“I think the team is excited to get back to training on Tuesday,” Basalyga said. “We are all very excited.”
