It's Dollar Night for Men's Basketball Home Opener

RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University men’s basketball team opens its 2008-09 home schedule Tuesday night in McBrayer Arena against Winston-Salem State. All tickets, hot dogs, popcorn and programs are just $1. Tip time is set for 7 p.m.

Also as part of the Dollar Night promotion, all bookstore concessions will discounted by $1. Meanwhile, three fans will have the chance to stuff their pockets full of cash in the First Southern National Bank money machine at halftime.

Eastern Kentucky (0-1) has won 10 consecutive home openers dating back to the 1997-98 season. The Colonels went 9-7 in McBrayer Arena last year, marking the seventh straight year EKU has notched a winning home record. Newcomers Dayvon Ellis and Papa Oppong made an immediate impact in their Colonel debuts Friday at FIU. Ellis was the starting point guard and dished out a game-high five assists. Oppong paced Eastern with nine rebounds, including four on the offensive end of the court.

Winston-Salem State (0-1) is led by former Colonel Bobby Collins (1984-88), who is in his third season as head coach for the Rams. Collins started all 29 games as a senior for EKU while leading the conference in steals (2.4 spg) and the Colonels in rebounding (6.9 rpg).

The Rams opened their season with a 92-47 loss at Georgia Tech. Senior forward Jamal Durham was the lone WSSU player to reach double-digit points (11).

This will be the first meeting between the two schools. Eastern Kentucky will return the game next year in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Following the game against Winston-Salem State, Eastern Kentucky will travel to Lubbock, Texas, to take on Big 12 foe Texas Tech on Saturday. This is the first of four games EKU will play as part of the 2008 Legends Classic.
