RICHMOND, Ky. – The 2010 Jeff Neubauer Basketball Camp was in full swing this week on the campus of Eastern Kentucky University. Almost 80 boys and girls were a part of the camp in its sixth year of operation.
“This year’s Jeff Neubauer basketball camp was a huge success,” EKU assistant coach and camp director Austin Newton said. “The kids [ages 7-16] were very eager to learn and easy to work with. Our goal, this year and every summer, is for the campers to take some of the drills and fundamentals that we taught during the week, and use them at home as they continue to develop as basketball players. We hope they had as much fun as our staff and players did.”
The camp featured several competitions including 1-on-1, 3-on-3, 5-on-5, ball handling, hot shot and free throws. Hustlers of the day were awarded each day in three different divisions – the OVC, SEC and NBA.
Many current and former Colonels were on hand to serve as camp counselors for the youngsters. They included
Willie Cruz,
Josh Daniel,
Joshua Jones,
Papa Oppong,
Spencer Perrin,
Justin Stommes and
Josh Taylor.
“Personally, this has been a great experience for me,” Cruz said. “It’s very rewarding to be able to put a smile on the kids’ faces. As a Division I athlete, I’m glad I have the chance to give something back. That’s what it is all about.”
