This spring, we will be profiling all six rising seniors on the Eastern Kentucky University soccer team. First up: Katie Bright.RICHMOND, Ky. – Senior midfielder Katie Bright, a nursing major from Fort Mill, South Carolina, played in all 19 games this past fall and ranked fourth on the team with 23 shots. She headed in a goal off an assist from Paige Larkin in a game versus Ohio Valley Conference foe Austin Peay on September 26.
Â
Katie, however, is not the only member of the Bright family currently playing Divisin I soccer …
Â
Katie Bright: I have an identical twin sister, Ellen, who is a goalie at USC Upstate in Spartanburg, South Carolina. This is the first time in our lives we haven't been on the same team, so that's kind of weird. But, we didn't want to go to the same college. I really wanted to play her this year, but it just didn't work out.
Â
EKU Sports: Why did you all not want to go to the same college?
Â
KB: We just wanted to do our own thing, because we were always compared to each other in high school. It was never as bad with soccer, because she played goalie and I played midfield, but with academics and basketball we were always compared. So, we just wanted to do our own thing.
Â
ES: Do you all keep in touch?
Â
KB: Yeah, we pretty much talk every day. We're a lot closer now than we were when we were little. I wish I could watch her play
Katie and Ellen Bright, identical twin sisters more often. I actually got to go to one her games at Northern Kentucky, but she has never been to one of mine. We watch each other's games online as much as we can.
Â
ES: Are you all competitive against each other?
Â
KB: Definitely. Although it worked out with soccer, because she always wanted to practice her goalie skills, so I'd go outside and shoot on her, which also helped me. Having a sister that's a goalie has really helped my PK skills.
Â
ES: Did you score on her more than she stopped you from scoring?
Â
KB: Yeah, probably.
Â
ES: Which one of you is older?
Â
KB: I am older by 10 minutes.
Â
ES: Do you ever hold that over her?
Â
KB: All the time. Ever since we were little. But now she's using it against me. She tells me it's going to come back and bite me in the butt when whenever we're really old.
