Tennessee Relays Results I Cumberlands Results
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Colonel distance runners finally got a chance to shine this outdoor season, as select members of the Eastern Kentucky University track and field team competed on a fast Tom Black Track at LaPorte Stadium this weekend at the Tennessee Relays powered by Sea Ray.
Senior
Una Britton led the way, defeating a field of 35 competitors in the women's 5,000 meters with a personal-best time of 16:53.41. That time is the second-fastest in the Ohio Valley Conference this season and the fifth-fastest women's outdoor 5,000 meters time in EKU history.
The Colonel men also excelled in the 5,000 meters on Friday night, as sophomore
Ambrose Maritim finished second out of 38 competitors with a time of 14:10.63, followed by sophomore
Luka Ndungu in sixth (14:22.26) and senior
Wade Meddles in seventh (14:24.08). Maritim's time is the fastest in the OVC this season.
Junior
Julie Mathisen also ran an OVC-best on Friday, finishing 10
th in the women's 1,500 meters with a time of 4:28.63.
In other Friday events, freshman
Tom Koringo ran 1:52.70 in the men's 800 meters, which currently ranks third in the conference; freshman
Jakob Abrahamsen ran 3:49.76 in the men's 1,500 meters, which currently ranks second in the conference; and freshman
Carina Schrempf ran 55.21 in the women's 400 meters, which currently ranks third in the conference.
On Saturday, freshman
Jamaine Coleman placed third out of 26 competitors in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:19.81, which currently ranks second in the OVC.
The women's distance medley relay team – comprised of Britton, Mathisen, Schrempf and sophomore
Charlotte Imer – then finished fourth out of nine teams with a mark of 11:55.35.
Other members of the EKU track and field squad competed at the University of the Cumberlands Invitational in Williamsburg, Kentucky this weekend.
Freshman
Isaac Lee PRed in both the 110-meter hurdles (16.43) and the 400-meter hurdles (56.17). His 400-meter hurdles time currently ranks seventh in the OVC.
Another notable performance came from junior
Adam Howard, who finished second in the men's javelin with a toss of 164-9, which ranks him seventh in the OVC currently.
On the women's side,
Darrian Botts won the triple jump with a leap of 35-9, while junior
Ashley Woolum placed second in the long jump with a mark of 16-7 and junior
Regina Straub placed second in the 400 meters with a time of 58.82.
The EKU track and field team returns to action next weekend when the Colonels split between the Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville, Virginia and the Centre Twilight in Danville, Kentucky.
