DES MOINES, Iowa – Eastern Kentucky University freshman
Carina Schrempf ran a personal and Ohio Valley Conference-best time of 2:07.61 in the women's 800 meters on Friday at the Drake Relays.
Schrempf finished sixth out of 12 runners in the loaded race at Drake Stadium. Her time is the third-fastest women's outdoor 800 meters time in EKU history, and it puts her in contention for qualifying for the NCAA East Regional. Schrempf's time currently ranks 30
th overall and seventh for a freshman in the East Region.
Schrempf, a native of Styria, Austria, won the 800 meters at the OVC Indoor Championships in February with a time of 2:11.75
Schrempf's performance is part of a strong showing by the Colonels in Des Moines this week. On Thursday, senior
Una Britton broke the EKU women's 10,000 meters record with a time of 35:07.68, while sophomore
Ambrose Maritim ran a personal and OVC-best time of 14:02.38 in the men's 5,000 meters.
Junior
Julie Mathisen, the two-time defending OVC mile champion, will compete in the women's 1,500 meters on Saturday at Drake Stadium.
The rest of the EKU track and field team will no longer compete at the Bellarmine Classic on Saturday due to impending inclement weather.
