EKU Track and Field Set for OVC Outdoor Championships this Weekend

RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University track and field team will compete at the Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Championships this weekend at Governors Stadium in Clarksville, Tennessee.
 
WHAT TO KNOW

- The two-day event gets underway on Friday at 10:00 a.m. ET and resumes on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. ET.

- This is the first time Austin Peay has hosted the OVC Outdoor Championships since 2011.

- Both the EKU men's and women's team finished fourth at the OVC Indoor Championships in Charleston, Illinois in February.

- The EKU men placed sixth and the EKU women placed fifth at last year's OVC Outdoor Championships in Edwardsville, Illinois.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR
 
- Senior Ole Hesselbjerg, the OVC Male Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year, will look to win his fourth-career OVC title in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. He is currently ranked second in the country in that event with a time of 8:33.22

- Sophomore Ambrose Maritim is currently ranked first in the OVC in the men's 5,000 meters (14:02.38) and enters the weekend seeking his first-career OVC gold medal.

- Junior Amos Kosgey is ranked atop the OVC in the men's 10,000 meters (29:10.87). Kosgey won his first OVC gold in the indoor 3,000 meters back in February.

- EKU has three athletes ranked in the top-five in the OVC in the men's 1,500 meters: freshman Tom Koringo is second (3:45.72), Kosgey is fourth (3:49.67) and OVC Male Freshman of the Year Jakob Abrahamsen is fifth (3:49.76). Any of those three could make a run for gold on Saturday.

- OVC Female Freshman of the Year Carina Schrempf is ranked first in the OVC in the women's 800 meters (2:07.61) and third in the women's 400 meters (54.01). Schrempf won gold in the 800 meters at the OVC Indoor Championships in February.

- Junior Julie Mathisen is atop the OVC in the women's 1,500 meters with a 4:27.27. Mathisen is the two-time defending conference champion in the indoor mile.

- Senior Una Britton is ranked second in the OVC in both the women's 5,000 meters (16:53.41) and 10,000 meters (school-record 35:07.64). She will be seeking her first-career OVC gold medal this weekend.

- Junior Alena Galertová is ranked second in the conference in the women's javelin with a toss of 138-2. Galertová placed second in the indoor pentathlon at the OVC Indoor Championships in February.

Following the OVC Championships, qualifying athletes will compete at the NCAA East Region Preliminary Rounds May 28-30 in Jacksonville, Florida.
