RICHMOND, Ky. – Over the spring and summer, we will be profiling members of the Eastern Kentucky soccer team. Next up: rising sophomore
Haley Kemper.
Haley, an occupational therapy major from Crestwood, Kentucky, proved to be quite a soccer player last season, scoring a pair of goals, both of which were game-winners. However, she is also way into boardsports.
EKUSports: Word on the street is that you're into four different types of boardsports. What are they?
Haley Kemper: Snowboarding, wakeboarding, wakesurfing and longboarding/skateboarding.
ES: /skateboarding?
HK: Yeah, they're pretty much the same thing.
ES: I see. But longboarding is on a longer board?
HK: Correct.
ES: How did you get into all these sports?
Haley Kemper has been into boardsports since she
was seven
HK: My family has always been big into skiing. When I was around seven, I switched over to snowboarding. My brothers got me into skateboarding, but I wasn't that good at doing tricks, so that's why I prefer longboarding, because it's more cruising and bombing hills. I got into wakeboarding because we have a lake house on Dale Hollow Lake that we visit every summer. We just recently got into wakesurfing because we got a new MasterCraft boat that allows us to surf closer to the boat.
ES: What's the difference between wakeboarding and wakesurfing?
HK: With wakeboarding, you're being pulled behind a boat by a rope. With wakesurfing, you get up with a rope but then you let go of it and, literally, surf the wake created by the boat.
ES: Cool!
HK: I actually broke my leg wakeboarding the summer before I started at EKU.
ES: Ouch!
HK: Yep, I broke my leg trying to do tricks that my brothers were doing. So, that's why I'm more into wakesurfing now. You can do more surface tricks and it's not as dangerous.
ES: Where do you longboard? Do you go to a skate park?
HK: When I was younger and skateboarding, we used to go to a skate park. But two years ago, I got my first longboard, and you can longboard wherever. That's what's so great about it.
ES: Which of the four sports is your favorite?
HK: Snowboarding is honestly still my favorite. I would like to straight-up surf one day. I think that would probably end up being my favorite.
ES: I could see you being a surfer.
HK: Snowboarding, though, is still my favorite, and it's the one I'm most experienced at. My family and I go to Breckenridge, Colorado every winter and do double black diamonds. My dad's dad, actually, skied professionally. My parents have skied in Germany and Switzerland. So, my family has always been into the snow sports. But, my brothers and I were the first generation to move into snowboarding. And now we're getting more into wakesurfing.
ES: You kids have moved on to the hipper sports.
HK: Yep.
ES: Are these sports dangerous?
HK: Usually not. I always wear a helmet, though. Always. Especially with snowboarding and longboarding.
ES: That's good. And smart.
