BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Eastern Kentucky freshman
Kayla Drake has been selected as the Ohio Valley Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, and the OVC Freshman of the Week, the league announced today from its Brentwood, Tenn., headquarters.
On Sunday, the Kokomo, Ind., native scored 33 points in Eastern Kentucky’s 71-61 win at Chicago State. She also had a game-high eight rebounds and a game-high six steals. Drake made 14-of-16 free throw attempts, including 9-of-10 in the final two minutes after CSU had cut a 12-point deficit to four.
In her first collegiate appearance on Friday against Ohio Valley University, Drake finished with 14 points, five rebounds and four steals.
Through the first two games of the season, the Kokomo, Ind., native leads the team in scoring and steals, and is second on the team with an average of 6.5 rebounds per game.
Drake is the first Lady Colonel to earn the conference’s player of the week award since Ashley Cazee on Nov. 26, 2008. She is the first EKU player to earn OVC Freshman of the Week honors since Amber Kirkpatrick on Feb. 26, 2007.
The Lady Colonels will return to action Wednesday when they face No. 12 Vanderbilt at Memorial Gymnasium in Nashville, Tenn. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET.
