Jones Earns A Pair Of All-Conference Honors

2010 OVC Postseason Awards

NASHVILLE, Tenn. –
Eastern Kentucky University freshman Alex Jones was selected second team All-Ohio Valley Conference, the league announced on Thursday at an awards reception in Nashville, Tenn. In addition to earning all-conference recognition, Jones was also chosen to the OVC All-Newcomer team.

Jones was selected as the OVC Freshman of the Week five times this season. No other OVC women’s basketball player has more freshman awards. She garnered her first OVC Player of the Week award on February 22 after a stellar performance at Morehead State. Jones is EKU’s first all-conference selection since the 2007-08 season.

The Elizabethtown, Ky., native led the Lady Colonels in scoring (12.0 ppg), rebounding (8.7 rpg), steals (45), blocks (25), field goal percentage (49.8 percent) and free throws (91). She is the only freshman in the conference to rank among the top-10 in scoring (10th), rebounding (2nd), field goal percentage (3rd), steals (6th) and blocks (3rd).

Jones registered seven double-doubles. She scored in double figures 16 times and grabbed 10 or more rebounds in a game nine times.

In her second collegiate game Jones hauled in 13 rebounds. In her fifth game, she scored 26 points to lead Eastern Kentucky to a 66-65 victory over Bethune-Cookman. Jones recorded her first double-double against Murray State on December 3, finishing with 12 points and 14 rebounds. She contributed 23 points in a win at Jacksonville State.

Jones came on strong near the end of the season. In her last three regular season games, Jones posted two double-doubles. At Morehead State on February 20, the freshman scored 34 points and grabbed 18 rebounds to lead EKU to a 12-point victory. She capped the regular season with 20 points and 16 boards against Murray State.

Jones’ 34 points against Morehead State were the most by a Lady Colonel since Laura Shelton scored 37 points at Austin Peay on Dec. 10, 2005. Her 18 rebounds were the most by a Lady Colonel since Laphelia Doss grabbed a school record 26 boards against Tennessee State on Feb. 25, 1996.

Jones becomes the 50th all-conference selection in program history and the third freshman to earn the honor. Lisa Goodin (1980-81) earned second team all-conference honors and Kim Cunningham (1993-94) was an honorable mention all-conference selection.
