Senior Spotlight: Mikala Ferguson

Mikala Ferguson wants to someday work for a Major League Baseball organization

This spring, we will be profiling all six rising seniors on the Eastern Kentucky University soccer team. Next up: Mikala Ferguson.

March 26 - Katie Bright (she has a twin sister who also plays Division-I soccer)

RICHMOND, Ky. – Senior midfielder Mikala Ferguson appeared in all 19 games this past fall and ranked second on the team at 1,485 minutes played. She notched an assist on a Cassie Smith goal versus OVC foe SIUE on October 19.

Mikala, however, has aspirations to work in a sport other than soccer following graduation …

Mikala Ferguson: I am a public relations major, and my dream job would be work for a Major League Baseball organization, somewhere in the front office. My plan is to go to graduate school and get a master's degree in sports management.

EKU Sports: Do you have a particular MLB organization in mind?

MF: No. I just really love baseball.

ES: What about baseball do you love?

MF: I just really understand the sport. I love to learn about it, and I love to read about the history of the game. It really intrigues me.

ES: No interest in working in professional soccer? The sport that you're really good at?

MF: No, definitely not soccer. Not football. Not basketball. Baseball.

ES: Fair enough. Where, exactly, did your connection to baseball come from? Did/do you play? Were you a softball player in high school?

MF: No, I never played softball.

ES: This just seems like a random thing!

MF: I guess it is random. My brother does play baseball. My dad loves baseball, and I always watch games with him. I also dated a boy who played baseball at Ole Miss, and when I went down there to watch him, I had a great experience. It was the south. The weather was great. It was the full, gung-ho baseball experience.

ES: Are you set on working in the MLB, or would you consider working in college baseball or Minor League baseball?

MF: I think college baseball would be cool! I guess it just depends on where. I would love to work for a baseball team in the south. Baseball is huge down there … and the weather is really nice.
