RICHMOND, Ky. – Over the spring and summer, we will be profiling members of the Eastern Kentucky soccer team. Next up: rising junior
Emmi Carroll.
Â
Emmi, a public relations major from Cincinnati, has been one of EKU's top offensive players the past two seasons. However, she did not reach this level of soccer without some bumps (or breaks) along the way.
EKUSports: You have apparently broken 12 bones in your lifetime. That's a lot. Talk to us a little bit about that ...
Â
Emmi Carroll: Most of them have been sports-related. There was actually a time I had two broken arms, simultaneously.
Â
ES: How in the world did that happen?
Â
EC: I was playing soccer, and I fell backwards and tried to catch myself with both arms.
Â
ES: And you continued to play with two broken arms?
Â
EC: I did. I just put bubble wrap around them.
Â
ES: You mean you didn't even have formal casts? Just bubble wrap?
Â
EC: No, I had casts. I put bubble wrap around the casts so I wouldn't hurt anyone.
Â
ES: That seems awkward. Did you look awkward?
Â
EC: I did look awkward.
Â
ES: Did people make fun of you?
Â
EC: Yes, all the time.
Â
ES: Was it difficult to play with bubble-wrapped arms? Did you score any goals?
Â
EC: It was difficult to run. But I did still score some goals.
Â
ES: Incredible! When was your first broken bone?
Â
EC: I broke my ankle when I was eight. I jumped off a couch and landed wrong on a block.
Â
ES: And it was all downhill from there …
Â
ES: How many of them have been non-sports related?
Â
EC: I slammed two fingers in a car door. They haven't looked normal since. So, I'd say only three were non-sports related.
Â
ES: How many have been non-soccer related?
Â
EC: I broke a wrist playing volleyball, and I've broken various fingers playing basketball.
Â
ES: Which break was the worst?
Â
EC: My senior year of high school, I was playing soccer and fell back and broke my wrist all the way through. They had to put me asleep to correct that one. It was, by far, the worst.
Â
ES: Did you miss your senior season?
Â
EC: No, I missed maybe a week, then bubble-wrapped it and got back out there.
Â
ES: You are tough.
Â
ES: So, I've never broken a bone. I also eat a lot of cereal. Do you not drink a lot of milk? What's going on here?
Â
EC: That's what my dad always says! It's because I did not like milk. That's his theory.
