RICHMOND, Ky. – With the three players earning all-conference honors, the Eastern Kentucky men’s golf team is preparing for the 2006 Ohio Valley Conference Championships and looking to capture its first title since 1997. Sophomore Justin Moore was named to the All-Conference Second Team while freshmen Trey Bowling and Jesse Massie were selected to the All-Newcomer Team.
The tournament is scheduled to be played April 23-25, one round each day, at the par-72 Country Club of Paducah.
Moore has played 12 rounds this spring while posting a stroke average of 75.4. The Somerset, Kentucky native finished in the Top 10 at three events and placed among the Top 20 at an additional two. Moore fired a season-low 67 in both the first and third rounds of the Colonel Classic in the fall and carded a 208, his best 54 holes, at the Earl Yestingsmeir Invitational.
A native of Manchester, Kentucky, Bowling currently leads the Colonels with a spring stroke average of 74.1 in nine rounds. His three-round 213 in the Belmont Intercollegiate is the team’s best 54 holes this spring and his fifth place finish marks his highest of the year.
Massie, one of just two players to compete in all five spring events, has finished in the Top 10 three times this year. He ranks third on the team, averaging 75.2 strokes this spring, and carded a season-best 211 at the Earl Yestingsmeir Invitational.
Last year, the Colonels finished eighth at the event, after entering the final round in fourth place, with a three round total of 898. Clay Ballard, a sophomore last year, tied for 12th place, carding a 220, while Josh McCracken’s 226 tied him for 26th place.
Sophomore Shaun McConnell owns the low round for the spring season, firing a 67 at the EKU Spring Invitational, while two players equaled that score during the fall.
Eastern has captured the team title nine times in the past, including five consecutive from 1982 to 1986. Eight Colonels have won the individual title, including current head coach Pat Stephens in 1982. Chris Bedore was the last player to accomplish the feat, taking home top honors in 1997.
In the past six years, the Colonels have finished in second place three times.
Results will be posted at the EKU Athletics website following each day’s round.
