RICHMOND, Ky. - In its final tuneup before Friday's season opener at Louisville, the Eastern Kentucky University women's soccer team defeated Union College, 5-1, in an exhibition game at EKU Soccer Field. The Colonels went undefeated during the preseason (1-0-1), as they tied IPFW, 1-1, in an exhibition game on Wednesday.
"These two games won't neccessarily dictate our season, but it is a good starting point," head coach
Lindsay Basalyga said. "We had some success, but some of our weaknesses were also exposed. We'll work on those weaknesses and move forward."
The Colonels received contributions from young and old as two seniors and three freshmen scored goals during the preseason. Senior
Carly Muller scored two goals, one in each game, while senior
Alex Raich, who enters the season as the team's career goal leader, scored on Sunday. Meanwhile, freshmen Nicole Donnelly, Kerry LeBrun and
Kristan Paynter all scored against Union College on Sunday.
EKU opens the 2010 season at BIG EAST foe Louisville on Friday at 7:00 p.m. The Colonels will play their home opener two days at later when they host Xavier at EKU Soccer Field at 1:00 p.m.
