BOX SCORE
LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Eastern Kentucky University women’s soccer team was shut out at Kansas, 3-0, on Friday night at the Jayhawk Soccer Complex. The Jayhawks scored in the 13th, 41st and 66th minutes en route to a season-opening victory. With the loss, the Colonels fall to 1-2-0 on the year.
“I was disappointed that we gave up two goals off corner kicks,” head coach
Lindsay Basalyga said. “But they didn’t really break us down, and we had some opportunities on the attack. But we’re not going to win if we’re giving up goals off set pieces like we did.”
Just 13 minutes into the game, Caitlin Noble scored off a corner kick from Erin Lewis to give Kansas an early lead. Four minutes before the first half ended, the Jayhawks scored off another corner kick as Caroline Kastor took a pass from Erin Ellefson and scored from the top of the box to make it 2-0 heading into halftime.
Whitney Berry provided the proverbial dagger in the second half when she received a pass from Kastor and buried one from about 22 yards out.
Kansas outshot EKU on the night, 20-6. Senior
Courtney Nestor and sophomore
Deja Tennon were the only Colonels to attempt a shot on goal.
Senior
Stephanie Lynch played all 90 minutes in goal and recorded five saves on the night.
The Colonels will try to bounce on Sunday afternoon when they face SIU Edwardsville. EKU is 2-0 all-time against the Cougars.
“The first three games of this year were a tough stretch for us,” Basalyga said. “We wanted to be exposed and we wanted to see how we played against the next level. We saw some things we need to work on and we’re a better team because of it. We’ll move on and take care of business on Sunday.”
