Luke Strege

Luke Strege is entering his fifth season with the Colonels and is the recruiting coordinator for the EKU coaching staff.

Strege engineered the recruiting efforts that brought seven newcomers to the program before the 2012-13 season.  Three of those became starters and five played significant roles as the Colonels won a school record 25 games and picked up the program’s first national tournament game victory in 68 years.

12133That same group helped EKU capture the 2014 Ohio Valley Conference Tournament Championship and nearly upset No. 2 seed Kansas in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.  Eastern Kentucky’s 49 wins the last two seasons are the most during any two-year period in program history.

Prior to arriving at Eastern, Strege (pronounced STREGG-ee) served six years on the staff at Quincy University in Quincy, Ill.  In 2009-10, Strege helped the Hawks finish 23-9 overall while climbing to as high as No. 10 in the Division II national polls.  Quincy earned a spot in the 2010 NCAA Division II tournament and advanced to the Sweet 16 for the first time in school history.  In 2007-08, Strege was promoted to Quincy’s associate head coach.

“I had known Luke for several years,” EKU Head Coach Jeff Neubauer said.  “He is passionate about winning as evidenced by his eight trips to the NCAA Tournament as a coach.  His presence as a recruiter and basketball coach is a big asset to our program.”

In Strege’s six seasons at Quincy, the Hawks posted six consecutive winning seasons and advanced to four NCAA Division II Tournaments.

Strege began his collegiate coaching career in 2000-01 as a graduate assistant at the University of Georgia.  He then spent two more years as a graduate assistant at Western Kentucky University (2001-03).  Strege’s three seasons at Georgia and WKU resulted in three trips to the NCAA Division I Tournament.

Before moving on to Quincy, Strege served the 2003-04 season as an assistant men’s basketball coach at Towson University in Baltimore.

Strege graduated from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse in 1999 with a bachelor’s degree in marketing. He and his wife, Christine, are the proud parents of Mason, Griffin and Jaxon.
