Patrick Peterson was hired as an assistant coach for distance in July 2022.
Peterson came to EKU from the University of Connecticut (UConn) where he was on the track and field staff as an assistant coach and operations manager.
Peterson’s responsibilities include recruiting all events and creating recruitment plans for future EKU athletes, assisting all track events, with a focus on long sprints and middle and long distances, and creating training plans, strength plans, and structure for the student-athletes.
Under Peterson’s guidance at UConn, six athletes qualified for NCAA Regionals, and one athlete qualified for NCAA Nationals. There were nine All-Big East athletes along with five school records broken.
Before joining the UConn staff, Peterson spent three years from August 2017 to July 2020 at the Atlanta Track Club, holding several positions including youth coach, a position in the high-performance department, and professional track and field athlete.
While with the Atlanta Track Club, he was responsible for social media uploads, photography, time management, and goal setting, on top of his time participating as an athlete. In his roles in the high-performance department and as a youth coach, Peterson was given the tasks of event management, program management, coaching, and strategic planning.
As a youth coach with the Atlanta Track Club, he coached three middle school state titles and three Region 4 USATF Junior Olympic cross country titles. Peterson also coached one USATF All-American and has his USATF Youth Coach and Safe Sport certifications.
Before Peterson’s coaching career, was a member of the track and field team at Sacred Heart and Iowa State. At Sacred Heart, he qualified for the NCAA Championships in 2012 and 2013. He also broke numerous program records along with both conference and New England records during his time at Sacred Heart.
At Iowa State, Peterson earned Big 12 and All-American honors in 2015 and he holds the school record in the distance medley relay.
