Hesselbjerg is the top returning runner on an Eastern Kentucky men's cross country team that begins the 2014 season ranked No. 21 in the country. Hesselbjerg finished third on the team and 105th overall at the NCAA Cross Country Championships in Terre Haute, Indiana last fall, where the Colonels recorded their best-ever national finish (15th).

The native of Charlottenlund, Denmark is also one of the top steeplechasers in the country. He was named a first team All-American for the second straight year when he finished third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (8:38.75) in June at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
