EKU Volleyball Picks Up Program's 700th Win

Colonels cruise to 3-0 win ove

Richmond, Ky. - The Eastern Kentucky volleyball team picked up the 700th win in the program's history with a 3-0 win over Marshall on Tuesday night. The Colonels (5-1) have now won five-straight matches heading into this weekend's NIKE/Comfort Suites Classic at Alumni Coliseum (Sept. 10-11).

"It's been a long week, we played 10 games on Friday and nine games on Saturday and went hard in practice last night, so I was a little nervous that we wouldn't have anything left," said EKU head coach Lori Duncan. "But the team came out from the get go and dominated defensively. Marshall's got a nice talented team but they were unable to control the ball tonight and that helped us set the tone."

Eastern rode another double-double from senior Lesley Aldridge (14 kills, 14 digs), who has now achieved the feat in each of the team's first six matches. Freshman Brittany Nobilio continued her strong play in the back court with a match-high 17 digs.

Eastern outhit the Thundering Herd (2-3) .237 to .176 and pulled out the sweep despite a 16-kill effort from Kelly-Anne Billingly.

The Colonels have been solid ever since suffering a 3-0 loss to Kentucky in the season opener, winning five consecutive contests, three of which went five games.

"We didn't play real well against Kentucky, but ever since then we've improved every single time we've taken the court," said Duncan.

This past weekend, EKU claimed the tournament title at the Duquesne/Robert Morris Invitational after posting a perfect 4-0 mark. For their play last week, Aldridge and Nobilio were named the OVC's Player and Defensive Player of the Week on Monday.

The Colonels will welcome East Tennessee State, Lipscomb and Evansville to this weekend's event, with their first match coming against the Buccaneers on Friday at 7 p.m.
