RICHMOND, Ky. - Sophomores Shelly George and Amy Arlinghaus each recorded a team-high 11 kills to lead the Eastern Kentucky volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep (30-21, 30-25, 30-22) of Austin Peay Friday night at McBrayer Arena. The victory was the Colonels fifth in a row and 24th straight at home.
George and Arlinghaus were two of four Colonels (20-6, 12-2) with double-digit kills, with juniors Kasha Brozek and Jessica Sabath adding 10 apiece. Sophomore Brittany Nobilio tallied a match-high 29 digs, including 18 in game one.
Game one was back and forth early but Eastern took the lead for good at 10-9 on a kill from Brozek, Austin Peay (8-19, 4-9) would get no closer than four the rest of the way. The Colonels closed the game on a 9-4 run, clinching the victory on another kill from Brozek. EKU held APSU to a .079 attack percentage, while hitting .302.
The Colonels maintained the lead for most of game two, building a five-point edge at 18-13. However APSU scored five straight to tie the score at 18 on a kill from Kelsey McNally. With the score tied at 20, EKU went on a 6-1 run to push the lead to five and would close out the game a few points later on a kill from George.
Eastern never trailed in game three as a 6-0 run midway through the game gave EKU its largest lead at 20-11. The Colonels coasted from there to the eight-point victory.
The Lady Govs were led by Ashley Genslak who hit. 333 and registered a match-high 13 kills.
The Colonels are back in action Wednesday, Nov. 9, hosting Morehead State at 7 p.m.
