MOREHEAD, Ky. – Trailing by four with less than two minutes remaining, the Eastern Kentucky men's basketball team rallied back with six unanswered points to escape with a 65-63 win at rival Morehead State Thursday night in Johnson Arena. The victory was the first road win of the year for the Colonels (7-8, 4-3 OVC) and kept the Eagles (1-12, 0-7) winless in league play.
Senior Matt Witt (22 points) posted his third consecutive 20-point outing to lead all players while fellow senior Jason McLeish scored 15 of his 18 points in the second period. Four players finished in double figures for host Morehead, including guard Quentin Pryor who finished with 19 points and a game-high five steals.
With the Eagles clinging to a 63-59 edge after Pryor connected on a jumper from the top of the key, Witt responded with a layup-plus-one on EKU's ensuing possession. Following a missed opportunity by Morehead State, sophomore Darnell Dialls found a wide open Michael Brock in the left corner for a three-point attempt. The junior calmly swished the bucket, his first three-pointer in three games, with :44 ticks left to put the Colonels on top, 65-63.
The Eagles had a few chances down the stretch to tie the contest, but could not convert. Pryor missed two free throws with :20 left, only to see the Eagles come away with the offensive board. MSU's Shaun Williams then tried a long-range jumper from the near corner. His shot bounced long allowing Eastern to grab the rebound. The Colonels missed the front end of a one-and-one with :04 on the clock, giving Morehead one final opportunity. However, Pryor's desperation three-pointer hit the back of the rim as time expired enabling Eastern Kentucky to post its third straight win over the Eagles.
Morehead State raced out to a 13-point advantage late in the first half, 33-20, thanks to converting 63.6 percent (14-of-22) of its shots in the first 20 minutes of play. The Colonels used a 9-0 run early in the second half to quickly get back into the game. After six ties in the second half, Morehead netted two consecutive buckets to claim the 63-59 lead and set up the dramatic finish.
Eastern Kentucky finishes a three-game road swing this Saturday, Jan. 14 at Eastern Illinois. Tip time is slated for 4:05 p.m.
