Volleyball Shuts Out Samford

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Junior Brittany Nobilio led the Eastern Kentucky volleyball team with 32 digs as the Colonels topped Samford 3-0 (30-16, 30-25, 30-19) this afternoon. Eastern Kentucky ends a three-game slide and improves to 10-12, 3-5 against OVC opponents while the Bulldogs drop to 6-16, 1-7 in the league.

Senior Jessica Sabath led Eastern with 17 kills, ending with a .259 hitting percentage, and 23 digs. Classmate Kelly Jennings recorded a team-best 35 assists while seniors Kasha Brozek and Denise Grundhoefer each ended with three blocks.

The Bulldogs took the early advantage in game one but Eastern Kentucky quickly pulled out to a 12-point lead. Samford tried to fight back, but the Colonels took the game, 30-16.

In game two, Eastern Kentucky took the early lead, pullling ahead by as many as four, but the Bulldogs would cut their deficit to two points. EKU extended the lead to seven and the Bulldogs could only close the gap to five before the Colonels took the second game, 30-25.

Samford and EKU played close early in the third game, but the Colonels would eventually pull out to a seven point lead. The Bulldogs got within two before the Colonels took a double figure lead to win the final game, 30-19.

Eastern Kentucky returns to action on Friday, October 20, hosting Tennessee State at 7 p.m.
