UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Senior Jessica Sabath tallied seven kills and eight digs tonight as the Eastern Kentucky volleyball team fell 3-0 (30-23, 30-16, 30-18) to #2 Penn State in the first night of the Penn State Invitational. The Nittany Lions stay perfect with a 4-0 mark while the Colonels drop to 1-3 on the year.
Senior Kasha Brozek led the Colonels with four blocks, two solos, while sophomore Brittany Nobilio finished with 16 digs.
Eastern Kentucky struggled to get on track offensively as it was unable to manage above a .100 attack percentage in any of the three games.
Game one was close as neither team held more than a three-point advantage until Penn State served four straight points to go ahead by six (21-15). The Colonels didn't give up without a fight though, staying within striking distance before Penn State claimed the first contest.
The Nittany Lions quickly jumped ahead in the second game, building an 8-1 lead before the Colonels called a timeout. Eastern Kentucky reached double-figures on the scoreboard after Penn State recorded its 22nd point of the game and the Nittany Lions earned the 14-point win.
PSU ended with a .445 hitting percentage in the second game, tallying 22 kills with just five errors.
In game three, the Colonels stayed within two points during the first third of the game before Penn State pulled ahead off five unanswered points, three as a result of EKU attack errors. The Nittany Lions went ahead by as many as 13 points (26-13) before ending the match with the 12-point victory.
Megan Hodge led Duke with a double-double of 10 kills and 13 digs.
The Colonels continue play tomorrow afternoon, facing Duke and West Virginia at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m., respectively.
