EKU Kicks Off 2008 NCAA Playoffs at Richmond

RICHMOND, Ky. – For the second straight year, the Eastern Kentucky University football team opens the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) playoffs at Richmond. Game time on Saturday, Nov. 29, is set for 1 p.m.

#21 Eastern Kentucky (8-3, 7-1 OVC) concluded the regular season with seven consecutive victories to capture its 20th OVC title and second consecutive league title. The Colonels are making their 19th appearance in the NCAA FCS playoffs, tied for most in the nation with Montana.

#7 Richmond (9-3, 6-2 CAA) has won five straight games, including a 23-20 overtime victory over rival William & Mary in the regular season finale. The Spiders are led by senior running back Josh Vaughan, who leads the CAA and ranks 10th in the FCS in rushing (117.8 yards per game).

The Richmond-EKU game represents the only first-round rematch from the 2007 playoff field. In fact, this is the first FCS playoff rematch since Montana-Northwestern State in 2001 and 2002.

The winner of Saturday’s game will face the winner of Appalachian State (SoCon) and South Carolina State (MEAC) in the FCS quarterfinals on Saturday, Dec. 6.
