JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – For the second day in a row, the Eastern Kentucky University men’s tennis team pulled out a 4-3 victory, this time over host Jacksonville Tuesday afternoon. Freshman Alex Das Izquierdo clinched the win with a three-set triumph at No. 1 singles. The Colonels (9-6) have now won five matches in a row.
Eastern opened the match by winning No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to take the doubles point. Sophomore Johannes John (No. 4) and freshman Francisco Fontoura (No. 6) then won their singles matches in straight sets to level the team score at 3-all. Das Izquierdo earned the deciding point by rallying in sets two and three for his seventh straight singles win.
“Our men have gutted out two matches in a row due to heart, discipline and conditioning,” EKU head coach Rob Oertel said.
The Colonels conclude their spring break road trip tomorrow at Embry-Riddle.
