Tough Schedule Continues For EKU Volleyball

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Eastern Kentucky University’s volleyball team will participate in the Pitt Classic on Friday and Saturday in Pittsburgh, Pa. The event is being hosted by the University of Pittsburgh and features Ohio University, Binghamton University and the Colonels. EKU opens play against Pittsburgh on Friday at 1 p.m. Eastern will face Ohio University at 5 p.m., on Friday.

The Colonels opened their 2008 season last weekend by winning one of three matches at the South Florida Invitational. After suffering back-to-back shutouts against Northeastern and South Florida, Eastern rebounded to beat Grambling by a score of 3-2.

Newcomer Lindsey Loescher leads the team with 30 kills in three matches. Loescher transferred from McHenry Community College where she earned All-America honors. Freshman defensive specialist Jill Henneman has been thrust into the setter’s role. She posted 35 assists in EKU’s win over Grambling State.

Pitt opened its season in Kentucky, playing in the University of Kentucky Tournament. The Panthers beat Western Carolina, and lost to Kentucky and Wisconsin. Ohio is 0-3 but all three losses have come to teams ranked in the top-12 in the nation, including No. 1 Penn State. Last season the Bobcats went 26-6 and won the Mid-American Conference championship. Binghamton is 2-1, with wins over Rutgers and Akron, in 2008.

Eastern Kentucky will conclude play with a match against Binghamton on Saturday at 11 a.m.
