CHARLESTON, Ill.
– Senior Mike Rose scored a game-high 27 points and tied a program record with seven three-pointers, but it wasn’t enough as the Eastern Kentucky University men’s basketball team fell to host Eastern Illinois Thursday night in Lantz Arena, 58-48. The Panthers improve to 7-9 overall and 4-2 in the OVC while the Colonels fall to 9-8 and 3-4.

Rose was the only EKU player in double figures as the rest of the team combined for 21 points. The guard netted 7-of-15 (46.7 percent) three-pointers and equaled the program record for the second time in his career. Former Colonels Ben Rushing (twice), Matt Witt (twice), Junior Curtis and Adam Leonard have also recorded seven three-pointers in a game.

With his seven trifectas, Rose also moved into the OVC career top-10 three pointers made list. The native of Naperville, Ill., currently sits in ninth place with 229 career three-pointers.

Eastern Kentucky trailed at the half, 26-25, before back-to-back three-pointers from Rose and freshman Joshua Jones put the Colonels ahead, 31-28. Over the next 10 minutes, lead switched hands four times before Rose’s final three-pointer at 7:52 gave EKU a 48-44 lead.

From there, the Colonels missed their final nine shots of the game as Eastern Illinois picked up its first win over Eastern Kentucky since 2003.

Eastern Kentucky shot a season-low 30.8 percent from the floor (16-of-52) and was outrebounded, 44-24.

Romain Martin and Billy Martin each tallied 15 points for Eastern Illinois. Ousmane Cisse recorded a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds.

The Colonels are right back in action on Saturday, Jan. 17 at Southeast Missouri. Game time is set for 8:45 p.m. ET.
