RICHMOND, Ky.
– The Eastern Kentucky University women’s soccer team staged a furious second-half comeback against Cincinnati Sunday afternoon at EKU Soccer Field; however, Julie Morrissey’s goal with three seconds remaining in regulation won it for the Bearcats, 3-2.

“It’s disappointing to crawl out of a hole we created, tie the score and then lose with three seconds left in the game,” head coach Lindsay Basalyga said. “But kudos to Cincinnati. They found a way to win.”

The Bearcats (4-3-0) jumped out to an early lead when, in the 16th minute, Melissa Bigg lofted a corner kick to Julie Morrissey, who passed it to Kendall Loggins, who fired a shot past EKU keeper Stephanie Lynch to make it 1-0.

Eleven minutes later, Bigg again lofted a corner kick, only this time Morrissey took the shot and scored, pushing the Bearcats’ lead to 2-0.

The Colonels' most productive attack of the first half led to a goal by junior forward Alex Hartwick; however, it was taken away by an offsides call.

Following halftime, however, the Colonel defense clamped down and allowed the frontline to organize.

Just three minutes into the second half, junior midfielder Alex Raich headed in a goal off a corner kick from sophomore midfielder Heather Bruce to cut the deficit in half. It was Raich’s first goal of the season and Bruce’s second assist.

Then, in the 72nd minute, senior defender Eva Hollenberg lofted a cross to Bruce who passed it out to Hartwick who tied it, 2-2, with her first goal of the season.

With time running out in the game, Morrissey took a pass from Erin MacDonald and fired a shot from about 20 yards out and over Lynch’s head to win it with just three seconds showing on the clock.

EKU (3-4-0) outshot Cincinnati 11-8 on the day and 7-3 in the second half.

Lynch played all game in the net for the Colonels and made three saves on the day.

The Colonels return to action on Sept. 18 when they travel to play Jacksonville. The match is set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
