Volleyball Denied Win In Five Set Marathon

RICHMOND, Ky. –
Eastern Kentucky’s volleyball team jumped out to a 1-0 lead, battled back from a 2-1 deficit, but couldn’t complete the comeback and lost 3-2 to Tennessee-Martin on Friday night in the Ohio Valley Conference opener for both teams.

Game scores were 26-28, 25-14, 25-20, 21-25 and 15-9. Autumn Harms led EKU (0-10, 0-1 OVC) with 13 kills. Lindsey Loescher recorded a double-double with 12 kills and 15 digs. Lauren Snyder totaled 10 kills.

#Abby O’Connor contributed a match-best 31 digs and Kate Hendle# dished out 38 assists.

Tennessee-Martin (6-4, 1-0 OVC) got 14 kills from Ashley Doherty and Britany Wilburn. Doherty added five blocks and Wilburn had three. Christen Clements recorded a double-double for the Skyhawks, finishing with 13 kills and 12 digs. Jenna Miller posted a match-high 48 assists.

In the decisive fifth set, Amanda Fago’s kill gave Eastern an early 1-0 lead. However, UTM scored five of the next six points to go on top 5-2 after back-to-back kills by Wilburn and Lauren Montague. Consecutive kills for EKU by Snyder and Harms cut the deficit to one, 7-6, but the Colonels never recovered from another 5-1 UT Martin run.

A kill by Doherty capped the run and gave the Skyhawks a 12-7 lead. Back-to-back EKU errors ended the set and the match.

The Colonels will end their road trip on Saturday at Murray State. EKU and the Racers will play at 3 p.m. ET.
