Volleyball Drops Home Opener

RICHMOND, Ky. –
Eastern Kentucky’s volleyball team lost to Morehead State, 3-0, Thursday night in the Colonels’ 2009 home opener. Liz Schuler recorded a match-best 12 kills for the Eagles (10-4, 3-0 OVC). Lindsey Loescher finished with 10 kills to lead EKU (0-12, 0-3 OVC).

Set scores were 25-16, 25-16 and 25-17. Morehead State held a 12 to four advantage in blocks and out-hit Eastern .292 to .048.

Schuler added six digs and three block assists to her totals. MSU’s Kaitlin Craven finished with 10 kills and five digs. Annie Gruenschlaeger totaled seven kills in 13 attempts and six blocks.

Loescher contributed seven digs for the Colonels. Junior #Abby O’Connor# posted a match-high 22 digs.

Loescher’s kill gave EKU an early 4-2 lead in the opening set, but Morehead State rolled off a 10-2 run to go on top by six, 12-6. The Colonels never got closer than five the rest of the set.

In the second set, the Eagles took the lead for good with three unanswered points to turn a one-point deficit into a one-point lead. MSU slowly worked out to an 11-point advantage. A kill by Gruenschlaeger and back-to-back EKU attack errors made it 21-10 in favor of the visitors.

The third set remained close through the first 15 points. A kill by Loescher kept the Colonels within one, 8-7, however Morehead State scored five of the next six to build a five-point cushion. A kill by Eastern’s Toni Michalski followed by a MSU attack error kept EKU within four, 15-11, but back-to-back kills by Schuler moments later doubled the Eagle lead to eight, 20-12. A kill by Kate Hendle left Eastern Kentucky within six, 23-17, late in the set before Craven closed out the match with consecutive kills.

The Colonels have the weekend off. They will return to competition when Southeast Missouri State visits McBrayer Arena on Friday, Oct. 2.
