MOREHEAD, Ky.
– The Eastern Kentucky University men’s basketball team defeated rival Morehead State, 59-49, Saturday afternoon to earn the team’s fifth consecutive road victory. The Colonels (11-9, 5-4) have held their last four opponents to 52 points or less.

Also with the win, Eastern Kentucky snapped Morehead State’s (12-8, 5-4) 24-game home winning streak and 22-game OVC home winning streak. At the time, both streaks were among the top six in all of Division I basketball.

Senior Josh Daniel paced EKU with a game-high 18 points thanks to hitting four three-pointers. Junior Joshua Jones chipped in with 14 tallies.

Morehead State’s Kenneth Faried hauled in a season-high 21 rebounds, but the Colonels limited the OVC’s second leading scorer (17.6 ppg) to just six points.

The host Eagles led by five points, 37-32, following a Demonte Harper three-pointer with 8:29 remaining. However, senior Justin Stommes quickly answered with his only trifecta before a Daniel lay-in on Eastern’s ensuing possession knotted the score at 37-all.

Morehead State answered with four consecutive points, only to see EKU respond again. A Daniel three-pointer with five minutes left gave the Colonels the lead for good, 42-41. Senior Spencer Perrin then netted a long-range shot a minute later to stretch the advantage to four points, 45-41.

Morehead State cut the deficit back down to one point, 45-44, before Daniel drained his fourth three-pointer to give the Colonels some breathing room. After sophomore Willie Cruz converted a back-door lay-up to stretch the lead to six points with 1:52 left, 50-44, Eastern made 9-of-10 (90 percent) free throws down the stretch to hold off the Eagles.

Midway through the first half, Eastern Kentucky took an 18-15 lead behind a Daniel trifecta. From there, the two teams would go the next 7:22 without a field goal made. The Eagles took a slim 24-21 cushion into halftime following a Faried jumper right before the end of the half.

Eastern shot just 25 percent (6-of-24) from the floor in the first half, but bounced back to shoot 40.7 percent (11-of-27) in the final 20 minutes. The Colonel defense held Morehead State to only 29.6 percent shooting, its second lowest shooting performance of the year.

Eastern Kentucky is back in action on Thursday, Jan. 27 when the Colonels welcome Austin Peay to McBrayer Arena. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
