FARMVILLE, Va. – Sophomore
Nicole Donnelly’s goal with less than five minutes in regulation sent the game into overtime, as the Eastern Kentucky University women’s soccer team battled host Longwood to a double-overtime 1-1 draw on Friday night.
Longwood (6-6-4) got on the board first five minutes into the second half when Kacie Oliver received a pass from Kelsey Pardue and beat freshman goalkeeper Annie Wickett to the left, giving the Lancers a 1-0 advantage.
It looked as though the Lancers would hold that advantage until the 86th minute, when Donnelly, EKU’s leading scorer a year ago, connected on a shot from the far right of the goal to dramatically tie the game and send it into overtime.
EKU (6-8-3) outshot Longwood, 6-4, in two overtime periods, but could not convert as the game ended in a draw.
“I’m very encouraged by the fight we showed today,” head coach
Lindsay Basalyga said. “I think we need to continue to be more urgent around our attacking 18 earlier in games.”
EKU dominated the game statistically, as the Colonels attempted 13 corner kicks to the Lancers four and outshot the Lancers, 19-12. Donnelly led all players in the game with five shots, two of which were on goal, while freshman
Devon Saini contributed with four shots. Junior
Deja Tennon came forward to recorded a season-high three shots, all of which were on goal.
Wickett played all 110 minutes in goal for EKU and made seven saves. The native of Frederick, Md. has not allowed multiple goals in a game since Sept. 9.
Tennon and Wickett were the only Colonels to go the distance in the marathon non-conference matchup.
EKU now returns to OVC play, as the Colonels wrap up the regular season by hosting Austin Peay on Friday and Murray State on Sunday at EKU Soccer Field. Senior Day will be celebrated before Sunday’s game.
"It will be nice to have this Sunday off and prepare for our last two OVC games of the season," Basalyga said.
