RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University football team begins a pivotal two-game road swing this Saturday at OVC rival Murray State. Game time in Murray is set for 2 p.m. ET.
The Colonels (4-3, 3-1 OVC) need a win at Murray State to stay alive in the hunt for the OVC title. Eastern’s running game has taken off over the last three weeks. During that stretch, EKU has piled up 993 yards rushing while averaging 6.2 yards per rush. The Colonels now lead the conference in rushing yards per game at 207.1.
Meanwhile, the Eastern Kentucky defense continues to keep the opposition off the scoreboard. EKU leads the OVC in scoring defense, allowing just 19.3 points per game. The defense will face a daunting test this weekend as Murray State ranks second in the league in scoring offense at 35.1 ppg.
Murray State (4-3, 2-2) has had two weeks to prepare for the Maroons following a come-from-behind 36-27 victory over Eastern Illinois on Oct. 15. The Racer attack is led by quarterback Casey Brockman who ranks third nationally (FCS) in passing yards per game at 310.7. Earlier this year in a win over Tennessee State, Brockman tossed the pigskin around for 600 yards. Also of note, Murray State’s special teams rank fifth nationally with five blocked kicks this season.
This is the 67th consecutive season Eastern Kentucky and Murray State have met on the football field. Both schools are original members of the Ohio Valley Conference which formed in 1948. The two teams have combined to win 28 OVC crowns. The Colonels have won nine of the last 10 contests overall while averaging 35 points per game in the victories. Murray State’s lone win in that stretch was a 19-16 overtime decision for EKU’s 2004 Homecoming game.
