EKU Set To Host Two Key OVC Volleyball Matches This Weekend

RICHMOND, Ky. –
A pair of key Ohio Valley Conference matches for the Eastern Kentucky University volleyball team will be held this weekend at McBrayer Arena.  The Colonels will host Jacksonville State on Friday and Tennessee Tech on Saturday.

The match against JSU is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. and Saturday’s match against the Golden Eagles is set for 2 p.m.  Broadcasts of both matches will air live on OVCSports.TV. 

The Colonels (9-9, 4-3 OVC) have won three of their last four matches and five of their last eight.  Eastern enters the weekend tied with Jacksonville State, Tennessee State and Murray State for fourth place in the conference standings.

By the end of the weekend, EKU will be one game shy of the halfway point of the conference schedule.

JSU is 6-11 overall and 4-3 in OVC play.  The Gamecocks have a pair of wins over Tennessee Tech and wins over Murray State and Austin Peay.

At 2-14 on the season, and 1-5 against conference teams, Tennessee Tech begins the weekend with a match at conference-leader Morehead State on Friday night.  The Golden Eagles only OVC victory came at home against Tennessee State.

Sophomore Ashley Edmond leads the team with 233 kills this season and ranks fifth in the OVC with an average of 3.33 kills per set.  She’s also second on the team with 187 digs.  Freshman Abbey Cvelbar has a team-best 645 assists and is eighth in the conference with 8.72 helpers per set.  She also leads the team with 20 service aces.

Freshman Hannah Burkle is Eastern’s top blocker, with 54 total blocks this season.  She ranks eighth in the OVC with 0.73 blocks per set.  Freshman Dena Ott has a team-high 334 digs and ranks sixth in the league with 4.51 digs per set.

Ott was named OVC Defensive Player of the Week on Monday and responded with 32 digs that night at Austin Peay.
