Colonel Volleyball Sweeps Jacksonville State

RICHMOND, Ky. –
Eastern Kentucky swept Jacksonville State, 3-0, tonight at McBrayer Arena.

EKU (10-9, 5-3 OVC) won by scores of 25-17, 25-16 and 25-8.

The Colonels were led by setter Abbey Cvelbar.  The freshman finished with 10 kills, no errors, 19 assists, five digs and two blocks.  Freshman Hannah Burkle added nine kills and two blocks.  Freshman Dena Ott contributed 15 digs.

Stephanie Koontz led JSU (6-12, 4-4 OVC) with 11 kills.

Eastern trailed only three times in the entire match.  A kill by Koontz put the Gamecocks on top 14-13 in the first set before the Colonels used a 7-1 run to take control.  EKU never trailed in the second set.  Jacksonville State scored the first point of the third set and led 2-1, but it was all Eastern Kentucky from that point on.

The Colonels responded by scoring nine straight points to key a 14-2 run.  Back-to-back kills by Ashley Edmond capped the run and gave Eastern a 15-4 lead.  EKU then closed out the match on a 10-4 run.

Eastern Kentucky posted a .354 attack percentage, finishing with 34 kills and only five errors.  Jacksonville State had 30 kills, but committed 26 errors for a .040 hitting percentage.  EKU out-blocked the visitors 6-2.

The Colonels will close out the weekend by facing Tennessee Tech at 2 p.m. on Saturday in McBrayer Arena.
