RICHMOND, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky University’s volleyball team won the first set, but Southeast Missouri State won three straight to claim a 3-1 victory on Saturday at McBrayer Arena.
The Redhawks (12-16, 10-7 OVC) won by scores of 24-26, 25-23, 25-22 and 25-19.
Freshman
Hannah Burkle led EKU (14-15, 9-9 OVC) with 17 kills and three blocks. Sophomore
Ashley Edmond added 14 kills.
Colleen Yarber led SEMO with 15 kills and also had 22 digs. Brittney Kalinoski added 14 kills.
Southeast posted a .193 attack percentage, compared to .140 for the Colonels. SEMO had eight more kills, 17 more digs and one more block than EKU.
With the score tied in the first set, 24-24, SEMO was called for an error and Burkle served up an ace to stake the home squad to an early 1-0 lead. The roles reversed at the end of the second set. After a kill by Burkle tied the score, 23-23, Emily Coon recorded a kill and Eastern followed with an attack error to end the set and tie the match, 1-1.
Eastern Kentucky closed within one, 22-21, late in the third set before SEMO scored two straight points to reach set-point. Moments later the Redhawks took the set and a 2-1 lead after an EKU error. A kill by
Kelsey Kuehner got Eastern within three, 20-17, in the fourth set before SEMO used a 5-2 run to close out the match.
The Colonels will conclude the 2011 regular season with two road matches next weekend, beginning on Friday at Tennessee Tech. The match is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. ET.
