RICHMOND, Ky.
– Junior Joshua Jones poured in a season-high 24 points, but it was not enough as the Eastern Kentucky University men’s basketball team fell in overtime to Morehead State, 76-68, in front of 5,450 fans Wednesday night in McBrayer Arena.

EKU (15-12, 9-7 OVC) led for the final five minutes of regulation, and was up 62-60 with 10 seconds left in the game, before Demonte Harper drove to the bucket, scored and was fouled to make it 62-62 with two seconds on the clock. Harper missed the ensuing free throw which sent the game into overtime.

Morehead State (20-8, 12-4 OVC) shot 71.4 percent (5-of-7) from the field in the overtime period to surge past EKU and earn the hard-fought victory. The Eagles have now won eight straight games since losing to Eastern on Jan. 22 and moved into a tie for first place in the OVC standings.

After equaling a season high with 12 three-pointers during regulation, the Colonels did not attempt a single three-pointer in overtime.

Jones shot 5-of-9 (55.5 percent) from deep in the game and also led the Colonels with four assists. Three other Colonels reached double figures as senior Josh Daniel scored 13, senior Justin Stommes tallied 12 and senior Spencer Perrin added 11 points.

Kenneth Faried led Morehead State as he recorded his 22nd double-double of the season with 23 points and 15 boards. Harper also notched a double-double for the night as he poured in 21 points and collected a personal-best 11 rebounds.

EKU jumped out to a quick lead in the game as Jones and Daniel sank consecutive three pointers before Jones converted a three-point play to give the Colonels a 9-2 advantage at the first media timeout. Sparked by a near-half court alley-oop to Faried, though, Morehead State swarmed back and took its first lead of the game when Sam Goodman drove to the rim and made it 13-12 with 14:39 on the clock.

Neither team would lead by more than four over the remainder of the first half. The back-and-forth action ended when Goodman converted a put-back at the buzzer to give the Eagles a 28-27 lead at intermission.

Morehead State built on its lead early in the second stanza as a Harper three-pointer made it 40-35 in favor of the Eagles with 15:29 left in the game. Jones’ hot shooting soon resurfaced, though, as he connected on back-to-back treys to give the Colonels their first lead of the second half and then found Daniel in the corner for a three-pointer that pushed EKU’s lead to 48-42 with 12:09 on the clock.

The lead-swapping continued, however, as Morehead State went ahead when Goodman penetrated and found Faried for a layup that made it 55-54 in favor of the Eagles with just under six minutes to play in the game. EKU retook the lead less than a minute later and held that lead until Harper’s bucket with two seconds to play.

The Colonels return to action on Saturday, Feb. 19 when they play at Western Carolina at 2 p.m.
