COOKEVILLE, Tenn.
– Kevin Murphy scored 25 points to pace host Tennessee Tech in a 63-54 win over the Eastern Kentucky University men’s basketball team Thursday night. The loss snapped a five-game road winning streak for the Colonels (12-11, 6-6 OVC).

Eastern Kentucky held Tennessee Tech (12-9, 8-4) without a point the final 7:09 of the first half to take a slim 24-20 lead into halftime.

However, the Golden Eagles responded with nine straight points early in the second stanza to retake the lead, 29-26. TTU never trailed the rest of the game.

A Chase Dunn three-pointer midway through the half gave Tennessee Tech a comfortable nine-point edge, 42-33. Eastern Kentucky kept the game close and was able to get within five points four times, but could get no closer.

Trailing 56-51 with just under three minutes left, senior Josh Daniel tried to drive to the basket only to come up empty. On EKU’s next possession, freshman Jeff Johnson missed a three-pointer from the top of the key.

Down the stretch, Tennessee Tech hit seven free throws to keep Eastern at bay and complete the season sweep over the Colonels for the first time since 2002-03.

The Golden Eagles scored 43 points in the second half thanks to shooting 45.8 percent (11-of-24) from the floor and converting 17-of-24 (70.8 percent) free throws.

Senior Spencer Perrin led EKU with 18 points and five rebounds. Fellow senior Justin Stommes added 14 points and three assists.

Murphy was the only Tennessee Tech player to reach double figures. Forward Alfred Jones tallied a season-high 14 rebounds as the Golden Eagles outrebounded Eastern, 42-27.

Eastern Kentucky is right back in action Saturday, Feb. 5 at Jacksonville State. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m. ET.
