Highlights From the 2010-11 Basketball Season

Three of the five starters in 2010-11 were seniors.
RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University men’s basketball team recently completed its sixth season under the guidance of head coach Jeff Neubauer and finished sixth in the Ohio Valley Conference standings. Below are some of the highlights from the 2010-11 season.

* Eastern defeated two teams that qualified for the NCAA tournament – Indiana State and Morehead State. EKU’s 59-49 win at Morehead State on Jan. 22 snapped MSU’s 24-game home winning streak and 22-game OVC home winning streak. At the time, both streaks ranked among the top six in all of Division I hoops.

* The Colonels won five consecutive road games in January, their longest such streak since 1965, while holding the opposition to just 54.6 points per game in that stretch. Tennessee Tech snapped that streak with a 63-54 win on Feb. 3.

* Head coach Jeff Neubauer earned his 100th victory at EKU on Feb. 5 at Jacksonville State. Neubauer is 102-86 (.542) in six years on the Colonel bench. Only two other Eastern coaches have ever won 100 games – Paul McBrayer (1946-62 – 219 wins) and Rome Rankin (1935-46 – 135).

* Senior Justin Stommes became the 30th EKU player to reach 1,000 career points when he netted a leaning jumper early in the second half against UT Martin on Dec. 4. The guard finished his career among the best in the EKU annals in scoring (1,277 – 15th), assists (300 – 6th) and three-pointers made (210 – t-3rd).

* Four players averaged at least 10 points per game for the first time since 2000-01 – senior Spencer Perrin (13.3 ppg), senior Justin Stommes (11.7), junior Joshua Jones (10.7) and senior Josh Daniel (10.6).

* Freshman Jabs Newby became the first Colonel in nearly six years to finish with double-figure assists in a game when he totaled 10 helpers at Georgia Southern on Jan. 2. Entering that game, Newby had tallied just six assists all year.

* Senior Josh Daniel played in 127 games throughout his collegiate career, equaling the most ever by an EKU player. Daniel scored a team season-high and career-high 24 points in the win at Georgia Southern on Jan. 2.

* Jeff Johnson was named OVC Freshman of the Week on Jan. 3 after averaging 14.0 ppg and shooting 64.3 percent (9-of-14) from the field in games against Georgia (Dec. 31) and Georgia Southern (Jan. 2).
