Volleyball Nips Troy 3-2

KENNESAW, Ga. –
Eastern Kentucky’s volleyball team overcame a 2-1 deficit to nip Troy 3-2 on the final day of the 2011 Owls Classic hosted by Kennesaw State University.  The Colonels fell to Alabama-Birmingham 3-0 in the first match of the day.

Troy (7-4) cruised to a 25-11 victory in the first set.  Eastern Kentucky (5-6) tied the match by winning the second set 25-20, but the Trojans answered with a 25-20 victory in the third for a 2-1 lead.  EKU tied the match with an “overtime” 27-25 win in the fourth set and then completed the comeback by winning the decisive fifth set 15-9.

EKU had eight kills and only one attack error for a .304 hitting percentage in the fifth set.

Sophomore Ashley Edmond finished with a match-best 22 kills to go along with a team-high 26 digs and four block assists.  Freshman Hannah Burkle had 12 kills and five blocks.  Senior Hannah Groudle had a match-high seven blocks.  Freshman Abbey Cvelbar finished with a match-high 45 assists and earned all-tournament honors.

EKU hit just .110 but out-blocked Troy 12 to 10.

Alabama-Birmingham (6-2) won by scores of 25-10, 25-18 and 25-17.  The Colonels allowed UAB to hit .439 and were out-blocked 10-1.

Freshman Alex Plagens led Eastern with seven kills.  Sam Serley posted a match best 10 kills for the Blazers.

The Colonels will play their first home matches of the season and open Ohio Valley Conference play next weekend.  EKU will host Austin Peay at 7 p.m. on Friday and take on Tennessee State at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
