RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University men’s basketball team will have a litmus test of sorts Wednesday night when the Colonels face undefeated and nationally ranked Murray State. Game time in Murray is set for 8 p.m. ET.
Eastern Kentucky (9-6, 3-0 OVC) has played extremely well over the past month, winning six of its last seven contests to move to the top of the league standings. In those six wins, the Colonel defense has held the opposition to an average of 58.3 points per game. A win over the Racers would move EKU to 4-0 in OVC action for the first time in 32 years.
Murray State (14-0, 2-0) is one of just four remaining undefeated teams at the Division I level. The Racers (No. 18/19) have already notched convincing wins over Western Kentucky, UAB, Southern Miss and Memphis. Murray State has won its two OVC games by an average of 28 points. Guard Isaiah Canaan ranks third in the OVC in scoring (17.7 ppg) and leads the team in assists (57).
The Colonels are 60-97 all-time against Murray State and 4-8 versus the Racers under head coach
Jeff Neubauer. Murray State has won six straight meetings against EKU. Five of those games were decided by 10 points or less including an overtime game in 2009. This is the only meeting between the two teams this season.
