RICHMOND, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky’s volleyball team defeated Wright State, 3-0, on Wednesday in the Colonels’ final home match of the 2012 season.
The Colonels (9-15) won by scores of 25-15, 25-16 and 25-21. EKU is now 5-3 in its last eight matches.
Alexis Plagens and
Ashley Edmond led the offensive attack for Eastern. Plagens finished with 14 kills, three aces and a block. Edmond contributed nine kills, 10 digs and a block.
Mallori Moffat posted a match-best four aces to go along with 26 assists.
As a team, Eastern had 10 aces compared to three for Wright State (2-26). Marisa Aiello led the Raiders with eight kills.
In the first set, EKU used an 11-1 run to turn a 9-7 deficit into an 18-10 lead. Back-to-back kills by Edmond brought set-point. The junior finished it off moments later with another kill.
With a one-point lead in the second set, the Colonels rolled of six unanswered to create a 12-6 cushion. A kill by
Kelsey Kuehner made it 17-10. The home team won the set on three straight Wright State attack errors.
The third set remained close throughout. A kill by Ashleigh Lucco gave the Raiders a 16-15 edge, but Eastern rolled off four straight to take a lead it would never relinquish. Consecutive kills by Plagens and freshman
Rachel Vick ended the set and the match.
The Colonels have four road matches to close out the regular season beginning Friday at Belmont. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. ET.
