NOTRE DAME, Ind. – After starting the season 2-1 last weekend, the Eastern Kentucky University volleyball team will be back in action this weekend. The Colonels will travel to Notre Dame for the Shamrock Invitational.
EKU will play Buffalo at 4:30 p.m. on Friday and Alabama-Birmingham at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. The Colonels will close out play on Sunday against the hosts Fighting Irish at 2 p.m.
Eastern started the season 2-0 for the first time since 2005 with wins against Youngstown State and McNeese State at the Spartan Showcase. Michigan State handed the team its first loss. The Colonels staved off match points in the third and fifth sets to edge Youngstown 3-2 and then swept McNeese 3-0.
Junior
Ashley Edmond led EKU with an average of 3.27 kills per set in the first three matches. Sophomore
Alexis Plagens contributed 2.45 kills per set. Freshman
Rachel Vick had an impressive debut. She averaged 2.27 kills and 0.45 blocks per set.
Kelsey Kuehner, who is making the move from outside hitter to middle blocker this season, led the team with 11 blocks in three matches.
Buffalo is 2-1 this season after picking up wins over Canisius and Oral Roberts. The Bulls’ loss came against San Jose State. Liz Scott led the team with 4.23 kills per set to go along with 1.0 blocks per set.
Alabama-Birmingham has won just one of its first four matches. UAB’s lone win came against UC Davis. Its three losses have come to Texas-San Antonio, Middle Tennessee and Furman.
Notre Dame is just 1-2 early on, but the Irish lost twice to top-5 teams. Preseason No. 1 UCLA beat Notre Dame 3-1 before the Irish swept Saint Louis. Preseason No. 4 Nebraska shutout Notre Dame and also beat UCLA to move to No. 1 in the first regular season coaches poll. Jeni Houser leads UND with 3.7 kills per set.
