DAYTON, Ohio – Rachel Vick and
Ashley Edmond each had 13 kills to lead the Eastern Kentucky University volleyball team to a 3-1 non-conference win at Wright State on Tuesday.
Eastern (9-12) won by scores of 25-18, 25-22, 22-25 and 25-20.
Vick made just three errors for a .323 attack percentage and led the team with three blocks. Freshman
Johanna Boyer recorded 12 kills.
Abbey Cvelbar had 40 assists and 12 digs.
Dena Ott had a team-high 19 digs.
The Colonels never trailed in the opening set. Eastern had a three-point lead, 19-16, before scoring four straight for a seven-point lead late in the set. A Wright State service error and attack error ended the set in favor of the visitors.
EKU was up four, 23-19, in the second set before the Raiders cut that margin in half. A kill by Ellen Senf made the score 23-21. The two teams then alternated points with a kill by Vick ending the set and giving the Colonels a 2-0 lead.
Wright State didn't fold. WSU never trailed in the third set. After Eastern Kentucky closed to within two, 23-21, on a kill by Boyer the Raiders called timeout. A block of an EKU attack out of the timeout gave Wright State set-point. A kill by Heidi Splinter cut the home team's deficit to 2-1.
The fourth set was close throughout. Eastern led by just two, 18-16, after a service error, but the Colonels responded by scoring four straight for a six-point cushion, 22-16. A kill by
Alexis Plagens gave EKU match-point before Edmond ended it with a kill.
Stephanie Ruffing led all players with 16 kills for Wright State (6-17). Haley Garr had 15 kills and a .448 attack percentage. Katie Glassmeyer led all players with 22 digs.
The Colonels return home to host a pair of conference matches during Homecoming Weekend. EKU faces Tennessee Tech at 7 p.m. on Friday and Jacksonville State at noon on Saturday.
